WoW Witch hat (aka Webkinz hat)

October 29, 2008

I knit this cute witch hat up for the Whisker’s on Wednesday Halloween edition… Sparky balked at ‘wearing’ it for a photo… but I finally managed after a full day to GET one ;-)

Kitty (Toy) Hat Pattern

Materials

Scrap Black worsted weight wool
Scrap alternate color worsted weight wool
US 5 Needles (knit on 2 circs, or DPNs)
Tapestry needle
Stitch Marker

Abbreviations

CO- Cast on
BO- Bind Off
k2tog- Knit two stitches together
sts- stitches

Gauge 5sts per inch

Loosely CO 61 sts (on 2 circs or DPNs)
Join in the round, being careful not to twist your sts.

Slip the first stitch of your round onto the last needle of your 2-circs round, or DPNs round.

Knit around until the last two stitches, k2tog (this prevents the ‘jog’ typically seen when knitting stripes of colors)

Place a stitch marker, or small loop of scrap yarn, to mark the beginning of your round.

Brim*

*Note, the brim of my hat was knit in garter stitch, this could certainly be knit in stocking stitch, but changing all the purl rounds to knit rounds.  I wanted to be sure my brim would not curl.  If you choose to knit the brim in Stocking stitch,  knit a purl round just before beginning the hat point.

Purl 1 round
*K8, k2tog, repeat from * around (54 sts)
Purl 1 round
*K7, k2tog, repeat from * around (48 sts)

Hat Point

Feel free to switch from 2-circs to dpns as you feel necessary.

Add your contrast color if you choose to knit the hat with stripes.

Knit 5 rounds (carry your main color  up with each round by wrapping around your working strand when you reach the beginning of each new round)
*K2, k2tog, repeat from * around (18 sts)

Switch to main color

Knit 5 rounds
*K1, k2tog, repeat from * around (12 sts)

Switch to contrast color

Knit 5 rounds
K2tog around (6 sts)

cut the contrast color and switch to your main color

Knit 3 rounds
*K2tog, K1, repeat from * around (4 sts)

Knit 1 round

Cut yarn and weave through remaining live sts.  Pull tight, weave in loose ends.

Happy Halloween Knitting!

If any of those cats on Whiskers have access to a voodoo doll, you will all be in big trouble! Of course, they do know where the yarn is……

I love it!! I wanna knit it for Henry to wear… maybe attach a little elastic. He’s quite tolerant of my insanity sometimes :D
