The Marshmallow (wo)Man Pattern

March 5, 2008 · 13 Comments

marshymen.jpg

Please Note: marshmallows are tasty treats that do not need to conform to specific shapes and sizes.. keep that in mind as you knit. This is a stress free, calorie free treat for the soul, and you should enjoy this experience rather than worrying about it! And whatever you do.. don’t let your kids ‘test’ to see if the paint is dry yet.. or the marshmallow men end up with squashed mouths, and crying eyes!

It’s not like THIS is going to happen…

Yarn: any light worsted or worsted weight white or off white (or whatever color marshmallow that floats your cocoa boat)

Gauge: Is so NOT significant, however if you really NEED a gauge provided here’s what I got with my light worsted weight cashmere blend (only the best for my little marshmallow recipients)…

10.5 sts in 15 rows is a 2×2″ swatch

Size: 3″ tall, 7″ waist (wow.. that’s one serious BMI)

Needles: US 6 DPNs
Notions: stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors, fiber fill, fabric puffy paints, and a large cup of cocoa

Skills, Knitting in the round, basic iCording, increasing and decreasing.

Abbreviations:

k - Knit
p - Purl
kfb - knit into the front and back of the stitch
k2tog - Knit two stitches together

Shaping the base (bum) of the Marshmallow (wo)man

Cast on 3 stitches leaving a 4-5″ tail** (see attached note)

Divide stitches between 3 DPNs, join in the round being careful not to twist stitches

k 1 round (3 sts)
kfb of every stitch in the round (6 sts)
kfb of every stitch in the round (12 sts)
k 1 round (12 sts)
kfb of every stitch in the round (24 sts)
k 2 rounds (24 sts)
kfb of EVERY OTHER stitch in the round (36 sts)
k 2 rounds (36 sts)
purl next round (36 sts)

Body of the Marshmallow (wo)Man

k approximately 25 rounds, or enough to satisfy your height requirement for your little Marshmallow guy
Purl 1 round
k 3 rounds
k2tog every other stitch (24 sts)
k 2 rounds
k2tog around (12 sts)
Stuff your little stay puff man with fiberfill of your choice * pull tail of yarn from cast on edge up through the fiber fill so that it hangs out the top of the body*
k2tog around (include in these decreased stitches the tail from the cast on edge, pulling the base as flat as possible before knitting the stitches together in this decrease round) (6 sts)
k2tog around (3 sts)

Cut yarn and thread through remaining stitches with tapestry needle. Pull tight and weave in ends (I just pulled the yarn through the stuffed marshmallow body)

Leg construction

Pick up 4 stitches in the lower purl row and knit an iCord for approximately 1 1/2 - 2″ or your ‘happy place’ for leg length (I mean, it’s not like I’ve ever actually seen a real marshmallow with legs, with the exception of the Ghostbuster’s Movie).

Shaping the ‘foot’

In the next iCord row, k the first stitch, kfb in next two stitches and k the last stitch. iCord these 6 stitches for 3 rows
In the next iCord row, k2tog, k2, k2tog (4 sts)
Still knitting in iCord, in next row, k2tog across (2 sts)
final row, k2tog, cut yarn, thread through last stitch, and weave into leg.

Repeat for second leg at appropriate leg distance (is there truly an appropriate distance between the legs of a marshmallow?)

Shape arms:

As with legs, pick up 4 sts in body of Marshmallow, in the area that seems appropriate for an arm on a neck-less marshmallow.

knit iCord for 1-2″ or whatever feels right for your Marshmallow.

Shape hands:

As with legs,

In the next iCord row, k the first stitch, kfb in next two stitches and k the last stitch. iCord these 6 stitches for 2 rows
In the next iCord row, k2tog, k2, k2tog (4 sts)
Still knitting in iCord, in next row, k2tog across (2 sts)
final row, k2tog, cut yarn, thread through last stitch, and weave into arm.

**(Note, it is tricky to work with only 3 stitches on DPNs, you have two options that I have tried, or a third of your own creation for dealing with this moderately tricky situation

a. Divide the 3 stitches on 2 DPNs (yes 2), and join in the round and knit one round. It’s a lot easier to manage the two needles. After knitting the first round, and the first increase round, THEN divide onto the stitches from the second needle (the one with 4 stitches) onto the 3rd DPN, keeping the stitches in the round and NOT twisted)

b. Start by casting on 6 stitches. Join in the round, knit two rounds, then continue with pattern above at the second increase round.

c. Think of some creative way to handle this and email me with your suggestion at 5malachrunner@gmail.com

Which color for the Clap?

March 5, 2008 · 12 Comments

Hey people! Chan posted about joining the Clapotis group (Fashionably Late KAL)… and I had done that oh.. a month ago maybe?? probably just a few weeks ago…

 clapotiskalbutton.jpg

I don’t have any pretty variegated yarns in enough yardage for the pattern… but I do have a few solids… and just went through stash and picked these two…

I wear lots of both colors, and both are listed as my favorite colors.. so… please comment and tell me which you think I should use…

ps. TLC CaraMia is discontinued, and I love this super squishy soft *Acrylic, Nylon, Rayon, and Angora blend. It’s so dang sad. I have 4 skeins of these two colors, and a coral and denim color as well… YUMMMMM I’m hoarding them for just the right patterns… can you tell?

Contests and friends

March 5, 2008 · 11 Comments

Hey everyone! I’m going to do my best to portray myself as my typical happy-go-lucky spunky personality here… because underneath it all, I’m in a foul mood! Maybe just maybe if I concentrate on pretending NOT to be… then it will work ;-)

I’m absolutely certain that despite my mood today, I have made probably the best friends EVER through this blog, and those people know who they are.. even if I haven’t said it directly… sometimes you just connect with people for the oddest reasons, perhaps because you share some UNEXPECTED things in common, like the fact that the word ‘Wicked’ does NOT mean evil in your vocabulary, or we’ve connected because of where we both grew up, or that in addition to those other things maybe it’s because my cousin was good friends with you, or it’s because you raise your children in a similar manner as I do… maybe it’s because you were there for me at the right time… or perhaps you didn’t even plan on making a friend but through another knitblogger I got to know you better and now love you like a sister… or even better, maybe it’s because I feel like you’re my lost twin…

I seriously didn’t set out writing my blog with all of that in mind… and I could go on and on describing ‘in code’ the folks I’ve become friends with.. but I won’t.. I’m using the above paragraph to cheer myself up…

One of my very first friends in blog land is Anne. She was just there for me when I really needed someone… and even though her insane work schedule (which will be nutty for at least the next week due to her release schedule) has kept us kind of ‘apart’ for a good portion of this year… I still consider her a very very close and dear friend. Anne was the sweetest to me at a time when I just really needed and extra hug, and because of that I sent her a care package… a swap box of sorts if you will, combining the various requirements of the swaps we were involved in together…. putting it together in secret (with the help of Chan, my secret spy friend)… was so good for my soul and was obviously well received and loved by Anne. She’s the sweetest friend you’ll meet… and.. she’s holding a contest right now! She wants you to send her your favorite patterns that are written and recorded by fellow knit bloggers! You know how wonderful it is to find a unique and brilliant pattern for free… (or even for a small price).. so go … give her the links to your favorite patterns you’ve found in blogland! **for some reason I can’t directly link to the contest post… so it’s the one on March 2nd, you’ll have to scroll down to find it…

Another knitblog friend is Devon, whom I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and yarncrawl with this past summer… She has a job that I adore… she’s a pastry chef.. ohhh yum… and her creations are simply amazing… I strive to be as good as she, at least with the things I’ve attempted ;-) Devon is celebrating her blogoversary and she wants you to tell her about your favorite dessert! So go… I’ll wait here for you.. really.. I’m not GOING ANYWHERE.. (hmmm wonder why?? more on that later, maybe.. if I feel like blabbing about my mood)…

And then there’s my friend Amanda, of NHKnittingMama (the etsy shop and the blog)…  She’s hosting the PIMP my store contest which I already did, but am re-mentioning it because I’m now listing a bunch of contests… her yarns are loverly, and she will do custom jobs too!  I know.. I have some gorgeous Chewy colored yarn for a scarf I intend to knit :-)

My good weight watchers buddy Kathy is hosting a month long contest at her blog, and all you have to do is comment to get an entry.  She’s giving out prizes each week, so check in with her daily for more chances to win! :-)

For those asking for the Marshmallow pattern.. I’ll post it today.  I wrote it out last night as I knit the two remaining marshmallows by request ;-)  The arms and legs still need knitting this morning, so I need to get on that as two kiddos weren’t too thrilled with their mama for not being totally COMPLETE sheesh! ;-)  I’m warning you, I do not know exactly how to perfectly describe SOME of what I did.. so you might have to wing it a tiny bit on a few areas.. hmmm like exactly where you pick up stitches for the arms and legs…  no biggie, I mean.. it’s a Marshmallow! ;-)

Ok, I’m feeling tremendously better, and now I need to go call a friend who invited us to a dinner on Good Friday to see if we can still come.. my other plans got canceled because we apparently don’t rank high enough in their book…
