Bolognese sauce whoas

September 18, 2007 · 6 Comments

Ok… I know this is totally silly, but someone from my bloglines posted a photo complete recipe of their bolognese sauce… it totally inspired me to make some tonight, I got the missing ingredients at the grocery store this afternoon.. and here I am, ready to go.. and can I find the darn blog it was from … NOPE!  I’ve checked EVERY blog on my bloglines… it took quite some time as I’m addicted to adding folks as I go along..  but I can’t find the darn thing anywhere!  TOTALLY COMPLETELY ANNOYED…

guess I’ll have to go to epicurious!

Fall into Autumn

September 18, 2007 · No Comments

Ok, the Fall into Autumn Dishcloth swap is one that I always love.. or at least for the previous two rounds I did.. and this round has a fun topic of the week that we need to post about… here’s this week’s topic:

TOPIC OF THE WEEK

When you knit or crochet dishclothes, washclothes or face clothes, what do you use? What size needle or hook? Wood? what type? Metal? Plastic? A specific Brand? Why do you love that needle or hook so much? Is there one you are dying to try? Is there a particular yarn you love and use all the time for clothes? What is so special about it?

Hmmm… I knit my dishcloths mostly with peaches and cream or one of those similar kitchen cotton brands that you can get at the local craft shop, ie Michael’s, AC Moore, or JoAnn’s … it’s cheap, and for doing dishes… easy and inexpensive is the way to go. I knit up my sis-in-law a facecloth a few months back with a finer weighted cotton blend, for a softer cloth, and for a bath cloth I like a nicer cotton.. something soft… like a Berroco Touche or Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece. I almost ALWAYS use wood needles, clover brand specifically, but that’s only because I haven’t seen any others out there to purchase some, size 6 or 7… I like my cloths a bit on the smaller side, so even if it calls for a larger needle I’ll use a 6… sometimes a 7… Not sure why I use this particular needle to be sure.. I think I like the wood because they’re quiet.. and in my life.. crazy insane life… there’s a lot of NOISE… so anything quiet suits me just fine!

Knit on size 7’s, clover bamboos.. and it’s for my Dishcloth Pal!

Fall Felted Fun

September 18, 2007 · 2 Comments

There’s a contest in my Fall Felted Bag Exchange… and here are the details:

1. Post on your blog, and give us SOME kind of secret “Bag in Progress” photo. You could share your yarn before you started, or a close up of your knitting, or the patterns you pondered when you began, or what you’re still pondering!

Ok.. this is difficult.. I’ve had to really ‘hunt’ for the yarn.. which sounds silly really, but I had trouble with one of the yarns,.. in the end I’m going to substitute.. but since I don’t yet have my yarn that was ordered.. I’ll give this little preview of the yarn my partner will get for her own projects…

swaptease.jpg

2. Post a link to the blog of one other swapper that you ‘met’ and have continued to read through the 3-2-1 contact post!

Lesley N. and I have a lot in common.. # kids, swaps, and it seems like personality.. even though she doesn’t post about her interests outside of Knitting on her blog (she recently blogged about this).. she and I share interests outside of knitting and blogging as well :-) Plus, she’s a previous swap pal of mine, that will hopefully find out about it today ;-)

I finally did it!

September 17, 2007 · 6 Comments

This weekend I knit SOCKS!

So… ok.. they’re baby socks…. but they’re socks.. and I think they came out cute.  The first one’s heel turned out much better than the second.. but I think it’s great practice for my first pair for me.. or rather.. for my kids… they all begged for a pair as soon as they saw the finished set for my friend Merry’s baby. :-)

Merry’s son is due on Halloween, hence the color scheme…

POA Preview

September 12, 2007 · 7 Comments

siriusposter.jpg

Ok, I finished knitting this up last night, and two things irk me… first.. I ran out of the yarn I was using… GRRR… and rather than rip 2/3 of the pattern I just finished in another color.. it’s fine… I”m just going to use it… not display it… second.. it’s much larger than my usual patterns…  I’m going to re-knit this today on smaller needles to see what it does to the gauge… I’ll post the pattern sometime later today

Here it is… the POA cloth (excuse the terrible photo quality.. I’ll take a new pic outside later)

Baggage

September 11, 2007 · 5 Comments

Baggage… sounds like I am carrying around some sort of troubles… but that’s not what I mean… Two things come to mind actually… the bag I knit while mom was here, and the baggage that my poor mom had to drag all over the Philly airport on her trip back to Colorado… I gave her so many random things to take back with her that she needed to borrow one of my duffle bags to get it all home. This wouldn’t have been such a big deal really except that we packed it full and checked it thinking that the only time she’d have to deal with it was when she got to Colorado and had to get from the airport to the public transportation.

My mom’s hip was replaced in February of 2006… so she shouldn’t really be bending and picking up heavy bags… but we figured the ONE time of getting onto the bus wasn’t a huge issue… little did we know about the flight troubles she’d encounter.

Mom was here in PA visiting and helping unpack etc. for a whole month! It was amazing to have her here and I got her knitting again as usual (I do that each time we visit with each other)…

momknit.jpg

She knit up two hats… I have to laugh even typing that… the first one came out too big… much too big.. but we decided that she could give it to my sister who has a big head (literally not figuratively…)… and then we thought, hmmm maybe if we wash it it will shrink a little… ummmm it grew??!! what’s with that??? I’ve never had an article of clothing GROW in the wash and dryer! So then she knit up another one… practicing her ribbing skills etc. Well this one came out too big too, but .. .it was wool… so we felted it… and it came out a bit smaller than we’d have liked… (not around, but in height)… it will work but won’t completely cover her ears for the really cold part of the Colorado winter… but that’s ok.. she (and I) really liked the final product… and the felting got rid of some of her mistakes which also made her quite happy :-)

She got tired of the NEVER going to fit hats… and moved onto dishcloths… why I never got a photo of the hats is beyond me…

momscloth.jpg

She started with this pattern, called Elfin lace. It was from the knitting pattern book that my first dishcloth swap pal sent me. She was really very happy with the result.. :-) And.. given that it was her first time knitting lace… she did AWESOME.. much better than I did when I went with my first attempt at lace ! She had nearly all the same distractions as me too… what’s with that??

We renewed our love of Tea while she was here, and she oooh’d and ahhh’d over my teapot from Mia

teamia.jpg

and we enjoyed the many Tazo iced teas she also sent in my tea swap package back in July… mmmm Om was really good… a mix of green and black teas.. yum!

Mom fell in love with the summer bag I knit… it’s perfect for the beach and those sandy toys, or for the grocery store to be a conscious green shopper… I knit this for my vacation swap pal! She put in her requests for a pink one and picked out the yarn from my stash. :-)

hpim0414.jpg

hpim0412.jpg

the bag has a drawstring that cinches the top nicely, and though the pattern didn’t call for it, I knit a strap to facilitate the ‘mommy’ who’s grocery shopping or beaching it and needs a free hand for a child…

bag.jpg

When I knit this up for mom though I’m going to take out one or two of the pattern repeats to make it a tad smaller…

Mom’s trip was awesome.. we had a fun visit, and the kids adored having her here (and maybe got used to her just a bit too much)… we’ll all miss her…

Fall Dishcloth Swap Topic question

September 10, 2007 · 1 Comment

fallbutton.jpg
Topic

Now that in some geographic locations the weather is starting to turn cooler, do you change the type of yarn(s) you knit/crochet with? If so, what do you now knit/crochet with instead and why? If not, why do you not switch and what do you knit/crochet with?

Nope… even in spicy hot NC in the middle of the summer I’ll still work with whatver yarn I have on the needles… cotton, wool, acrylic (yep I even knit acrylic)… doesn’t matter.. now that being said, I have not knit very much with wool… I have done a handful of felted projects…
