Harry Potter

April 19, 2007 · 2 Comments

So I joined the Harry Potter Sock Kit Swap… I’m really excited and also a bit ‘frightened’ as I haven’t ever knit socks.. I’ve made christmas stockings before.. but not socks… so I figured EVERYONE seems to be so addicted to making socks.. and since I ALWAYS have tons of things on the needles, why not add fuel to my addiction fire ;-)

I was sorted into the Hufflepuffs by 3 of the 4 quizzes… interesting that the 4th sorted me as a Slytherin… eeks!

There was a question on the HSKS site today.. and I’m not sure if I’m supposed to post it here or not.. but here’s the question.. and the answer…

“You know what, Harry? If he doesn’t stop trying to save your life he’s going to kill you.” Who said this and about whom? This was said by Ron to Harry about Dobby’s attempts to ‘protect’ Harry from various evil things ;-)

Nature lovers are we

April 15, 2007 · 1 Comment

I’m so pleased that my master’s in Biology does get a ‘little’ use here and there. I take great pleasure in teaching my Littles to love God’s creatures great and small. The kiddos would rather carry an insect outside from our home than squish it… and I couldn’t be happier to see them do this.

Our newest ‘neighbors’ include a number of Eastern Tent Caterpillars… which I honestly would prefer NOT to have around, but the kids love to study them… img_2339.jpg

Abby finds feeding them and teaching them to ‘hang upside down’ in preparation for cocoon making etc. to be the highlight of her weekend… but even newer neighbors are much more exciting to me…

mama has had her nest in this cute little hole right at perfect viewing height for me in the tree in our front yard. We’ve occassionally peeked in to check on her… and she’s been a dutiful mom waiting patiently for her little ones to arrive…

Yesterday I peeked in and thought I didn’t see anything at all… I was a bit worried that she wasn’t there, and that I didn’t see any eggs.. but I took a closer look and sure enough.. little beaks nestled in amongst grey feathers… 4 to be exact.

But Abby’s biggest find was that if you ‘tweet’ like mama, here’s the result…

beaks begin to open!

How cool!

Parental Panic

April 13, 2007 · No Comments

Every parent experiences that sudden panic of losing their child at one time or another… we had a terribly scary experience with JJ when he was 2 losing him in a large store.  Fortunately the store management was on their toes, locked the store and everyone helped us find him.  I never want to relive that.  Well Chelsea decided to give me her version of the same scare right here in my own home!  We’d finished up dinner, and I’d ’seen’ her get down from the table while her siblings were still munching away at their food…  I started cleanup when I realized I couldn’t hear her playing in the living room.  I called her… NO RESPONSE… I searched the house with no luck… she can’t even open the door to our home but I thought.. ‘Great.. today’s the day she finally figured it out…’… it had been probably 15-20 minutes since I ’saw’ her get down… where could she be??  I was really in panic mode.. I had the older two running around with me yelling her name…

I finally decided to head outside.. and in our new house.. when standing near the front door you can see through the living room into the dining room… and here’s what I saw as I glanced in that direction…

it always amazes me that kids can fall asleep in such odd positions!

I can laugh now at the situation.. but that adrenaline rush is never one I like feeling!

You know you’re a runner when seeing a freshly cleaned pile of your favorite running socks makes you want to go for a run!

I just wish I could say the same about seeing my pile of running bras… maybe it’s time to invest in some I really LOVE.

An explanation

April 4, 2007 · 1 Comment

Ok… so I taught myself to knit, or so I thought anyway…

Actually, to be totally honest, my step mother taught me to knit… I was 12 at the time, and I have very little recollection of her teaching me, but I do know she did. She taught me to throw, and I think that’s the only time I ever did. I did it as a bonding sort of thing, and while it did work, and we bonded… I don’t recall every finishing any ‘projects’…

Then 8 years pass and I’m in college and looking for a stress reliever and wanted to make my then boyfriend a cool gift… so I bought some needles and yarn and a pattern for a strip Aran cabled afghan and off I went. I taught myself how to knit again… and little did I realize that I re-taught myself to knit continental style, but still.. incorrectly… I have knit incorrectly since I was 20… and while I haven’t always knit consistently since then, I can say I’ve knit consistently incorrectly since then! ;-)

How did I figure this all out… well, I should have figured it out last year when I was working with a knitting group to try to teach some newbies to knit. They were interested in my style because it’s different from most American knitters… so I tried.. however no one could quite GET what I was doing… so they all now Throw.. ;-) And thankfully Lee took over the teaching much to my approval!

In February I knit the mid-month KAL with the yahoo group, MonthlyDishclothKAL… and it looked NOTHING like the expected result. It was this pretty lace dishcloth.. not too hard a pattern by any means.. just a bunch of yarnovers and k2tog… should have been simple… but NOPE… no go for me. Someone then posted that she was having problems getting the holes to appear in hers and that she thought it was because she knits continental and that her yarnovers needed to be done differently. She pointed me to some videos of knitting techniques so I could see if I was doing my YOs wrong.. and know what I saw… that I’m KNITTING wrong!

Weird… but true. So.. you’re maybe wondering what on earth did she do?? Well, I have ALWAYS knit through the back of the loop and never through the front. I thought… hmmm.. .easy to fix.. .and i tried it… and for some reason when I got around to pearling behind a knit row… things went kaplooey! I couldn’t get my needle into the loop, it was angled the wrong way and was too tight to get into… and then when after 10 minutes I could finish a row.. all sweaty and worked up and stressed.. the yarn was all crossed and looked funny… I was so frustrated and my dear hubby was so funny.. he’s like… ‘why re-teach yourself if it’s so frustrating… the way you knit before was fine.. just don’t do any lace patterns’… which seems simple enough.. so I went back to my regular method…

A few weeks later I’m sitting there wishing I could knit this pretty lacey shamrock dishcloth, but know that I shouldn’t waste my time.. it won’t come out right… so off I go again trying to re-teach myself. Well, I finally figured out my problem… it’s my PEARL stitches now…

My pearl stitches.. well, this is harder to explain… I mean I was technically pearling ‘almost’ correctly in that I went in from right to left through the front of the loop, however it was how I was grabbing the yarn… I was just litterally grabbing the yarn and pulling it through the loop instead of wrapping it around and pushing it down through the loop… maybe you can visualize what I’m explaining.. but I had to watch the video tutorials on it a few times to get it right…. so now.. I can finally knit correctly, though my fingers don’t always know that… they revert out of habit to the ‘Michelle’ method now and again… it’s frustrating.. because I could always knit in the car, even in the dark before.. and now I need to see what I’m doing to make sure I’m doing it correctly… I know I’ll get back to that dark knitting level at some point.. but I just feel liberated knowing I can knit correctly now! ;-)

Oddly, I never saw any problems in my completed projects with my old method… funny that I just taught myself that whole process and had it work out ALMOST right!

Life is always busy

April 2, 2007 · 1 Comment

It doesn’t really matter how much I plan to get to post on my blog… life as a parent of three children ages 6 and below just never works out the way you plan it ;-)

The weather has been beautiful… spring is here and in full bloom which means we’re out in the garden working. The new house has so much potential, and so much work to be done! I’m nearly done with the raking in the front yard and took some pics of the house finally to share.

The kids have each picked beds for their ‘fairy garden’… and we’ve purchased plants and seeds and have worked the beds so we’re ready to plant at long last. We did some previous planting in pots that are showing growth and exciting the littles!

We’ll be out in the yard for sure today getting plants into the ground and seeds sewn! YAY!

This morning I took the camera with me when I took the dogs out… the morning light in our yard always makes for a beautiful backdrop with all the dogwoods and redbuds blooming… I only got a few shots as the dogs saw a kitty in the neighboring yard and holding two leashes and a camera wasn’t working as well as I’d hoped!

I actually got a much better shot (even though through the screen) from the kitchen window..
